Every year, auto insurance frauds add around $200-$300 to individual insurance premium. These estimates are given by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, however, this amount is worthless when it is compared to the overall impact that it has on each business that pays insurance. Fraud is considered the second most expensive white-collar crime in the United States. The problem is so widespread that around a quarter of physical injuries resulting from car-crashes are fraudulent. As the number of fraud-crimes increase, the companies have to charge additionally for services and goods. This means that customer goods and insurance premiums are affected along with the taxes.
Auto insurance frauds are usually classified as "soft" or "hard". Hard fraud is the one that involves staging an event only to get covered by the insurance. These frauds include:
- Rear-end collision done on purpose
- Claiming a phony injury and faking a trauma
- Staging a one-car accident
- Injuring people who were not in the car during the accident
Staged accidents are known to be the most dangerous type of insurance frauds for a common driver. If you are the victim and if you are not at fault, the premium is still going to rise or perhaps even the policy might get cancelled. On the other hand, a soft fraud, which is also called "build up", provides more opportunities and involves the policy holders. In fact, it is not only the policy holders who participate, but there are organized frauds involving lawyers, doctors, and auto mechanics as well. These frauds can:
- Add some of the previous damage to current claim
- Plot with a body shop and claim to have a repair estimate
- Scheme with doctors and get hold of certificates claiming medical treatments
