Can someone help me identify this snake?

I saw this snake in my yard but I don't know anything about snakes. The snake is black, possibly with sort of white patches along its body (I can't be sure because I was looking through binoculars at a pretty far distance), also I'm less sure about this, but its head is kind of flat (not king cobra flat, but just flatter than it is wide), and it is approximately 3 1/2 to 4 feet long. Its location is in southern West Virginia, USA. Thanks!
