Rack Lighting Crash Course

A server rack does not come stocked with a lighting system.  To run an efficient server room, lights need mounted within the racks to facilitate maintenance.  Installable goose neck lights use either incandescent or LED bulbs for increased visibility.

Rackmounts have front and back lights.  Front lights are mounted within the rack.  The incandescent and LED lights are nearly identical.  Both include dimmer switches to control the brightness of the illumination.  The incandescent bulbs are 12 watts with replaceable heads for easy maintenance.  The LEDs are cool, efficient bulbs that have a lower lighting level.  What the LED bulbs lack in illumination they make up with their lifespan; they rarely require changing.  The choice between incandescent or LED lights is subjective, allowing the technician to make the right choice for him or her.

Back mounted lights for server racks are incredibly similar to front lights.  They either come in incandescent or LED powered bulbs.  The back lights connect to a BNC slot in the rack.  They both are attached to 12” goose necks for maneuverability.  The 4 segment LED lights seldom need replacing and give off little heat to ensure a cool, efficient lighting system.  While the incandescent lights do die, their heads are removable for simple replacement.  Their lights are brighter, making the area easy to work in.

Emergency situations, while infrequent, do happen.  To ensure reliable lighting, Pelican 2480 lighting stations are highly recommended.  These small stations use a LED array of five small lights to create photo luminescent brightness.  The emergency light is powered by alkaline/titanium cells for an extended burn time and shelf light.  These stations can be mounted anywhere, providing ample light for situations without power.

Installing these lights into a server rack, coupled with the addition of emergency lights for guaranteed visibility during power outages, will make maintenance a hundred times easier.  It is not necessary to have both front and back lights installed.  However, it can increase clarity depending on your server room’s overhead lighting set-up.  With the combination of front/back rack mount lights and Pelican emergency lights, you will have maximum visibility in your servers.

Cooling a Computer Room?

In every computer I have worked in they always had an AC cooling the space. My company is moving to a new building and the place that is laid out for the computer room does not have its own air system.

The HVAC company thinks all I need is a Thermostatically controlled exhaust fan.

The room is 8X8, 10 rack mounted servers, 3 Switch's, Phone system , 2 routers, and a ups system.

Can I rely on a fan to cool the new computer room?

In short the answer is no. A fan can never cut it when it comes to cooling of a server room. You need at least a window mounted AC unit set up to cool that room. We require all rooms containing servers or high priority equipment to be AC cooled. Usually the temperature is somewhere around 25 Degrees Celsius in those rooms.
