Canon XL2 users - under what circumstances would it be preferable to use a mixer?

An amateur question, I know - but under what circumstances would I simply hook my mics into the XLR outlets in the back ... and when would it be preferable to use an external mixer?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Really you can just hook your mics right into the back of the camera. If you are a nut about sound quality and don't find mini dv "good enough" you could use a mixer and record to a separate device ( like the m-audio recorder). The only time I ever use a mixer is if I have multiple mics or wireless mics to deal with, even then I use the RCA jacks form the out on the mixer. The XLR ports on the XL2 are designed to work with mics not mixers, or line inputs. Use the RCA inputs located on the side of the camera to bring in audio form a mixer or other device that is not a mic. Really if you are just using a boom or 2 lapel mics the xlr on the back is fine. Plus if you use the XLR the audio channels are recorded separately. A word of caution if you plan on recording 4 channel audio with the camera ever, the quality goes down slightly form 2 to 4 channels (not enough to really notice) and final cut will only import 2 audio channels at a time.
